PEACE RETURNS TO SALERNO

Many families escaped the bombings and artillery fire but returned to find their homes destroyed.

American and German troops have long since left Salerno in this view taken nearly two years after the landings. The structures are badly battle-scarred, but jagged mountain peaks in the background still give beauty to a panorama at the Salerno harbor.
