William R.
Furr
Born
in Austin Texas on December 15th, 1947 Colonel William R. Furr begun his
military career in 1968, when he enlisted in the 122nd Car Company of
the Texas Army National Guard. He attended the State's Officer Candidate
School and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1971.
His first assignment was in the ammunition office of the 71st Airborne
Brigade, Texas Army National Guard and in 1973 he was assigned as the
Assistant Division Ammunition Officer of 49th Armored Division. As a
company grade officer he commanded the 49th Division Material Management
Center and Company D, 949th Maintenance Battalion. His field grade
officer assignments included; Maintenance Management Officer, 49th
Material Management Center, Forward Area Support Coordination Officer to
the 2nd Brigade, 49th Armored Division, Executive Officer 1st Forward
Support Battalion and Security, Plans and Operations Officer for the
49th Division Support Command. Colonel Furr commanded the 111th Support
Battalion (Forward) and the 249th Support Battalion (Main) of the 49th
Division Support Command. He also served as the Deputy Director of
Maintenance, Director of Facilities and Engineering and Director of
Maintenance for the State Area Readiness Command.
Colonel Furr also served as a Military Technician within the
Directorates of Logistics, Maintenance and Facilities and Engineering.
His twenty two years of Civilian supervisory experience improved morale
and proficiency in all of his areas of responsibility as his influence
touched nearly every part of the Texas Army National Guard and the
Adjutant General's Department.
Colonel Furr graduated from Lanier High School in 1966 and earned his
Bachelor's of Science Degrees in Social Psychology and Human Resources
Management from Park College in 1987, Summa Cum Laude. He received a
Masters of Education degree in Counseling and Guidance from Southwest
Texas State University in 1992, as a member of the Psi Chi, National
Honor Society.
Colonel Furr's numerous military awards include the Legion of Merit,
Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf
cluster, Air Force Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components
Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and National Defense
Service Medal. His state awards include the Lone Star Distinguished
Service Medal, Texas Outstanding Service Medal, Texas Medal of Merit and
the Texas Faithful Service Ribbon.
With nearly thirty four years of service, Colonel Furr's irreproachable
character, prestigious record and outstanding performance of duty
reflect the highest credit upon himself, his family the State of Texas
and the Army National Guard.
