Austin&#8217;s colony) to 1903 when the Congress created the National Guard. From 1903 to the present the museum tells the story of the Texas Army and Air National Guard, as well as the Texas State Guard, in both peacetime and wartime.\u00a0 Permanent exhibits utilize uniforms, weapons, equipment, personal items, film, music, photographs, battle dioramas and realistic full-scale environments to tell the story of the Texas Military Forces in the Texas Revolution, the Texas Navy, the Texas Republic, the Mexican War, the Battles along the Indian Frontier, the War between the States, the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, Peace Keeping Deployments and the Global War on Terror. Living history programs, battle reenactments and other special events take place throughout the year. Admission to the museum is FREE.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>The Museum is located on an active military base.\u00a0 Due to current security protocols visitors 18 and older must be vetted at the Visitor Control Center before entering the post.\u00a0 The VCC closes at 3 p.m.\u00a0 Please arrive at the 35th St. no later than 2:55 if you wish to visit the museum.\u00a0 All Adults ages 18 and up will need to show a photo ID such as a US Department of War military ID or military retiree\/dependent issued ID card, a US Govt. issued ID card or a state issued driver&#8217;s license,\u00a0 or state-issued ID, or a US Visa, etc. to enter Camp Mabry.\u00a0 At this time a foreign passport or foreign military ID card without an accompanying US VISA does not allow access to Camp Mabry even in the company of a valid ID card holder.<\/p>\r\n<p>Please enter the post via Maintenance Drive off of West 35th Street (just before Pecos). All of these experiences are available to visitors courtesy of the Texas Military Forces Museum Living History Detachment which conducts a series of battle reenactments, demonstrations, displays, parades and living history programs throughout the year to make history \u201ccome alive\u201d for young and old alike.<\/p>\r\n<p>The primary focus of the detachment is the 36th Infantry Division in World War II and the famous Texas Brigade during the War Between the States. However, the detachment also participates in World War I and Vietnam War events as well as other time periods.<\/p>\r\n<p>The museum\u2019s living historians travel around the country to take part in historic events, but the backbone of their schedule are three programs that take place on Camp Mabry each year: the <strong>Close Assault 1944 living history program<\/strong> which occurs over <strong>Memorial Day weekend<\/strong> and <strong>Veterans Day weekend<\/strong> and the annual <strong>Texas Military Forces Open House \u2013 Muster Day<\/strong> event during
