{"id":5534,"date":"2023-09-29T15:59:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T15:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=5534"},"modified":"2023-09-29T15:59:43","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T15:59:43","slug":"mabry-mixer-with-dave-gutierrez-author-of-patriots-from-the-barrio","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/?tribe_events=mabry-mixer-with-dave-gutierrez-author-of-patriots-from-the-barrio","title":{"rendered":"Mabry Mixer with Dave Gutierrez, author of Patriots from the Barrio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5535\" src=\"https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2288\" height=\"1541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad.jpg 2288w, https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad-768x517.jpg 768w, https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad-1536x1035.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad-2048x1379.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/texasmilitaryforcesmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/dg-ad-1200x808.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas Military Forces Museum Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Author Dave Gutierrez<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>September 28, 2023 \u2013 San Jose, CA- The Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the 80<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary of the Italian Campaign in WWII with their first Mabry Mixer of 2023 featuring author Dave Gutierrez<\/p>\n<p>Gutierrez\u2019s book \u201cPatriots from the Barrio\u201d tells the true story of Company E in the 141<sup>st<\/sup> Infantry, an original Texas National Guard unit composed entirely of Mexican Americans from the barrios of Texas.\u00a0 The book was named one of the twenty-four best history books of all time by Book Riot.\u00a0 Hollywood Actor\/Producer Wilmer Valderrama\u2019s production company has obtained the exclusive film rights to the book and is working to produce a TV series based on the true story.<\/p>\n<p>Company E in the 141<sup>st<\/sup> Regiment of the 36<sup>th<\/sup> Division was deployed to North Africa in early 1943.\u00a0 In September of 1943 they spearheaded the Allied landing at Salerno Italy.\u00a0 Company E would go on to fight up the Italian peninsula towards Rome at Mount Rotondo, San Pietro, and the disastrous Rapido River Crossing.\u00a0 In January of 1944 the 36<sup>th<\/sup> Division would lose over two thousand men during their attempts to establish positions across the Rapido River.<\/p>\n<p>Gutierrez\u2019s relative Ramon Gutierrez who served in Company E from Del Rio Texas and was assigned to the all Mexican American unit, would also become one of only a few Americans to be decorated for valor on the battlefield by the Soviet Union during WWII.\u00a0 The author states, <em>\u201cThey were part of one of the most unique and historical US. Army units and I wanted to make sure that their sacrifice and honor to their country was not forgotten<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There are several books and films on other historic units such as the Tuskegee Airman, the all African American pilots and the 442<sup>nd<\/sup> Infantry made up entirely of Japanese Americans.\u00a0 However, Hispanic contributions to WWII has been missing in mainstream media.\u00a0 The book takes the readers from the barrios of Texas into some of the most horrific battles during the Italian Campaign of WWII.\u00a0 Using genealogy research as a foundation, the author connected with over sixty different families of the men that served with his relative in WWII to tell their true story.<\/p>\n<p>Several of the family members of the men who served in Company E will attend the event at Camp Mabry including Austin resident Ricardo Palacios III, his father Ricardo Jr from El Paso served in the historic Company E.\u00a0 Maria Betancourt Chapa will also be attending the event.\u00a0 Mrs. Chapa was only three years old when her father Trinidad Betancourt of Mission Texas was killed in action at the Rapido River in January of 1944.
