Chaplains of the
36th Infantry Division

Chaplain (Colonel) Herbert E. MacCombie
Division Chaplain

Graves Registration School

While we were in North Africa we held two schools on Grave Registration.  It was the policy of the Division Commander that chaplains would not normally be assigned as the Graves Registration Officer.  All regiments, battalions, and companies were required to appoint Graves Registration Officers.

One school was held in May.  The second at the end of June.  The Division Chaplain was the Director.  Captain Vincent M. Lockhart of Division Headquarters and Lt. Lee Allison of the 36th QM Company, the Divisions Graves Registration Officer were special lecturers.  These were relatively large schools. Failure to attend any session had to be explained through channels to the Division Commander.  The climax of the school was a field exercise with practical experience.  The lessons learned here were to prove essential when we reached Italy, France, Germany and Austria.
