Remember the true meaning of Veteran’s Day with this stirring look back at World War II. Close Assault 1944 honors the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans by focusing on the history of the 36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard during World War II. The free program features members of the Texas Military Forces Living History Detachment exhibiting the uniform and equipment worn by the American GI in the European Theater of the Second World War, as well as those of his German opponent. In addition, the two-day event will provide guests the opportunity to witness firing demonstrations of the most famous U.S. and German small arms of World War II, as well as see everything from tents and radio equipment to GI baseball gloves and mess kits and operational vehicles such as an M4 Sherman Tank, M3 Halftrack and Jeeps.
The event will take place rain or shine and bleachers will be available for seating. Show times are at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Texas Military Forces Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the weekend. Both the program and admission to the museum are free.
Camp Mabry is open to the public and adults will need to show a valid photo ID such as a driver’s license or a military ID to come on post.
Hands on History–Uniformed reenactors will be displaying weapons from the Texas Revolution through Vietnam, and members of today’s Texas Army National Guard will be exhibited weapons from the current time.
You’ll be able to climb up inside aircraft and armored vehicles and actually TOUCH HISTORY. A fun and educational experience for the entire family!
The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. with Free Admission for all. To avoid waiting in long lines to get inside a tank, consider purchasing an “Early Bird” ticket for 5 pm entry for $5 per person ($1 for those 13 and under.) Cash, Debit and Credit accepted.
We recommend long pants as some vehicles will be outside and tank armor gets pretty hot! Sensible shoes are a must!
Freal Milkshakes & Smoothies and Kona Snow Cones will be on hand starting at 4 p.m. so if you want to eat or get a snack before, during or after the event you can!
The Texas Military Forces museum presents “Over There-1918” A Living History program of the “Great War” experience of the US soldier.
On Saturday November 20th and Sunday November 21st, 2021 the Texas Military Forces Museum will commemorate the 36th Infantry Division’s combat debut on the Western Front with a special WWI battle reenactment. Showtimes at 1:00 pm both days.
This event will allow visitors to see some of the most common weapons of the First World War in action including a fully restored and operational F17 tank, a French 75 mm artillery piece, a U.S. 3-inch field gun, an MG 08 “Maxim” machine gun, an Austrian Schwarzlose machine gun and a variety of rifles and other weapons. American, German and French troops using period equipment and wearing correct uniforms will demonstrate the tactics employed by the victorious Allied powers during the brutal final month of combat in the Great War. We invite you to join us as we recall the service and sacrifice of American doughboys in the “War to End All Wars.”
